01

Triage what is urgent

Bring overdue obligations current where possible and contact the creditor if you cannot make a payment. Check that minimum payments are covered while you decide how to reduce balances. A debt-paydown plan should leave room for necessities and closing costs.

02

Correct records through the proper process

Gather proof for an incorrect account, balance or late-payment entry, then follow the bureau and creditor process. Keep the date, case reference and response together. Paying a credit-repair service does not guarantee an accurate negative entry will disappear.

03

Set realistic review dates

Ask your lender whether an updated statement or corrected report is needed and when to reassess the application. Reporting schedules and scoring methods vary. Avoid new borrowing or unnecessary applications while the file is under review, and explain any unavoidable change promptly.

A question worth asking

How many points will paying a card add?

There is no dependable fixed number. The effect depends on your complete history and the scoring and reporting process.
