01

Inspect each relevant report

Accounts may be reported differently across the nationwide credit-reporting companies. Review identity details, balances, account status, payment history and inquiries. The CFPB explains how to obtain reports and prepare before shopping for a mortgage.

02

Keep a written dispute trail

For an error, identify the exact account or entry, why it is inaccurate and what evidence supports the correction. Contact the reporting company and the company supplying the information. Retain responses and let the mortgage lender know about unresolved issues that affect the file.

03

Understand denial information

If the application is denied partly because of a credit report, review the adverse-action information and your rights to obtain the report used. Do not assume the denial reflects the same score shown by a consumer monitoring service.

A question worth asking

Should I paste a full report into this site?

No. Keep account numbers, Social Security numbers and credit-report documents out of educational chats and enquiries.
